Welcome to Karvi's Waypoints
Living and Exploring on an Ocean Cruising SailboatHI THERE!
WE’RE DAN AND NANCY BERKEY
Way back in 2014, we finished careers in IT and kid raising, sold the house, gave away all the stuff and set sail on our sailboat, Karvi. That’s Karvi over there in the photo. This little interweb back water is where we share our adventures on the high (and low) seas.
Our first year we sailed from San Diego south to Puerto Vallarta, up into the Sea of Cortez, and right back to San Diego. In spite of all the surveys we had a bad engine. Okay, we missed the kids too!
A year and a new engine later we pointed south again. Since then we’ve sailed, motored, swam, scuba dived, snorkeled, kayaked and lounged around Mexico and the Sea of Cortez.
Now, we’re aiming for Panama and the Caribbean. Unfortunately as I write this, the world is shutdown, pandemic, bad virus! But hope springs eternal and we hope we are soon on our way to more adventures.
We share our adventures here to keep in touch with family and friends but also to help you decide if cruising might be your adventure too.
So, welcome to Karvi’s Waypoints! We’re glad you found us, we hope you’ll regale us with great wisdom through your comments, and we hope you come back often.

The Battery Project
We started cruising in 2014 and replaced the batteries in 2016. In our short cruising life we’d heard enough failed battery stories to know we didn’t want to do the battery dance every few years if we didn’t have to. This post details a conversion from lead acid to lithium and all the considerations required.
The Lithium Question
Is it time to put lithium ion batteries on your boat? Full disclosure, we have lithium-ion batteries on Karvi and have had since 2016. So, the answer to the Lithium Question for Karvi is yes, and I’m very happy with the choice. But that doesn’t mean the answer for you is yes.
