Hello

We're Dan and Nancy

Back in 2014 we retired early, moved aboard our 45 foot sailboat, traded the freeways for the ocean and haven’t looked back.

We’re both midwesterners, Indiana, small towns.  We met in college at Purdue University where Nancy studied Math and Dan studied Economics and Computer Science.    We have an age difference of 4 years because Dan served 4 years in the US Marine Corps before college.  We met in 1981 and married in 1983.

We raised two kids — excellent kids, Chris and Katie,  in Tempe, Arizona where Dan worked in corporate IT management and Nancy worked in kids and the homefront logistics management.  The kids grew up, went to college and graduated.  Both served their country after college.  Chris became a combat Marine serving two tours in Afghanistan.  Katie became a Navy pilot flying the Gruman C2 Grayhound AKA Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD). Both have completed their active service and are now married and leading civilian lives

So what’s with the sailing?  Dan grew up sailing.  Dan’s Dad Pete taught him to sail small boats  at an early age on Lake Wawasee in Northern Indiana and later on a big boat (40 ft) on Lake Michigan.  Throughout the years in Arizona, Dan longed for the sailing life and finally in 2002 took the whole family through sailing school and chartering in the British Virgin Islands in 2003.  The writing was on the wall and the rest as they say is history.

This website is the record of our adventures, places we go and things we do. Follow along.  We hope you can get some entertainment, and information about what it’s like to live and travel on a boat.

The Battery Project

The Battery Project

We started cruising in 2014 and replaced the batteries in 2016. In our short cruising life we’d heard enough failed battery stories to know we didn’t want to do the battery dance every few years if we didn’t have to. This post details a conversion from lead acid to lithium and all the considerations required.

The Lithium Question

The Lithium Question

Is it time to put lithium ion batteries on your boat? Full disclosure, we have lithium-ion batteries on Karvi and have had since 2016. So, the answer to the Lithium Question for Karvi is yes, and I’m very happy with the choice.  But that doesn’t mean the answer for you is yes.
